I was like yay this is going to really help me streamline things in my new home… Then I remember me and the kids have Iphones and my wife has a Pixel…
I use Home assistant for the brain and expose switches to Apple so I can use voice commands to set scenes or run automations.
all devices are ikea because they are insanely cheap and easy to replace. The ikea buttons to control the lights on the wall stay within the ikea ecosystem and dont expose to anything else but they are rarely used.
HA runs in a VM on a Small form factor desktop running several other "server services for media VPN UPS ect. The whole thing at idle only uses 35watts. But it also handles the livingroom TV with Kodi and serves the media and shares its Kodi DB (MariaDB) with the bedroom PC also running kodi.
The only thing i’ve ever had to do with HA to fix it is reboot the VM instance.

Ok, this is all overwhelming, but I’m willing to try home assistant.. To start off, if like to keep voice control/automation simple… So am I correct in saying I need the home assistant green, with a zigbee USB dongle? I’m choosing to use Google with home assistant.
Do I really need an ssd starting off.. Could I get away with just using a micro sd card?
