  1. Pretty normal. Get a degree. I did i was 22. B.A. in History, been in IT since 99 but the degree had got me in the door and past HR

  2. Companies want ways to filter people out, but you are really paid for your experience and skills.

  3. Eh this was true +3 years ago, but now everyone who’s applying for an entry-level IT job has some kind of CS degree, so if you’re new to the field not having one is a pretty significant disadvantage. Old timers don’t really need one, they’ve got decades of experience to stand on.

If you can, take online classes offered by your local accredited state school or community college (avoid MTTI, DeVry, etc., very few will take those seriously). Get some good certs, too, and well-known bootcamps if you can. Projects are always a plus and can help you stand out.

  4. If you are a woman and want to get into comp science – you will be hired.

No sexism here – actually the opposite.

Way too many guys and of course she got hired.

I wouldn’t say this example of getting hired will work for everyone.

  5. You don’t need a 9-to-5 when you’ve got Girl Boss Hustle: Earn 10k from Home. It’s time to start thriving, not just surviving.

  6. I have no degree in engineering and I did
    – 5 years in Linux systems engineering
    – 2 years in software development
    – 2 years in platform engineering
…I got bored and jumped the fence to Enterprise Sales(solutions) Engineering. You don’t need a degree, but you better be very capable are your job and you damn well better be good at making relationships to compensate.

  7. if you have no college degree, then you are a computer technician and not a computer engineer. computer technician even if they do coding job, make about 60k a year. computer engineer with a computer engineering degree make about 100k a year.

  8. You are not getting into a good job without a degree or founder experience. Don’t listen to this broke lady

  9. After 1 year of applying to over 250 jobs, I finally landed a full time job! Working Monday through Friday, 8-4.

I now have evenings and weekends free to spend quality time with my wife and child. I thank God for this wonderful gift of life and this blessing.

My word of advice is to pray to God every day (or pray to the universe if you’re Buddhist), asking him for help and always being grateful for your current circumstances.

You’re reading this because you’re alive.

I also cold emailed several businesses because I realized the job sites tend to have fake listings from overseas companies pretending to be American companies so they can skim personal information from Americans.

Best to apply directly on the company’s website.

  10. Yes it is true to apply to anything, timing matters. I work in HR for a Fortune 500 company and I promise your resume will not even be viewed if you have no degree for an advanced position 😂 trust whoever you believe

  11. I feel like the bachelors degree thing isnt so much about knowing the field, but its weeding out people (for the most part) who aren’t stable and intelligent enough to get an education. But with how expensive and impossible it is to get an education now of days, it’s just not viable or fair, because a lot of people dont get an education for these reasons. Not just because they aren’t stable and smart.

  12. This is very true. Don’t talk yourself out of applying, even if you feel that you’re under qualified

  13. I helped hire at a small company. Often companies NEED staff, and they may put certain "requirements", but they’re not just going to close down shop because they can’t find someone who fits their narrow profile, they will hire the best candidate.

  14. An advanced computer science degree, meaning a Masters or higher I assume. Companies have a lot of options, free market, blah blah.

  15. For 99.9999% of you male viewers…. ignore this and people like her… she’s an attractive woman…. she’s going to get bailed out and hired no matter what she did or didn’t do….

  16. This is totally true. I’ve been an SWE for two decades and have made hiring decisions for many SWE candidates.
I once fell into the trap of choosing the candidate with multiple degrees (MIT and CalTech) over the self-taught in spite of the latter having great experience and interviewing well. The former candidate ended up being so arrogant and useless, ruined the team, threw tantrums in front of clients, wrote sloppy code. Yet some of the best engineers I ever worked with were 100% self-taught and simply brilliant, talented people who for arbitrary reasons of socioeconomic background or whatever weren’t sent off to “elite” schools.

  17. This got to prove when people say white people have the privilege when come to job market compare to other races especially black folks.

She doesn’t have any degree or anything from college and she got offered 70K job which says as a requirement to have advance degree in computer science. I can guarantee you in the same job that she got there are people who applied probably had an advanced degree in computer science but they rejected those people on the grounds that those individuals did not have enough work experience for the job. They will used that as an excuse to filter out those individuals from the candidate list because they are black, Asian, Latina or Native American etc.

Such practice is really common in the UK a black person with advance university degree will apply for a where he/she can be top applicants by virtue of his/her qualifications but they won’t even look at their application once they look at the name or national insurance number they can tell he/she is not white but the same job will be offer to white person with no GCSC let alone a university degree, they will employ this uneducated and unskilled white person hoping to be train on the job by someone who is already overloaded with multiple responsibilities in the company and these practices make UK job markets unproductive and inefficient.

This unethical practice in the UK was even called out by a former UK PM where a black lady could not even get an invitation for a job interview after applying for hundreds of jobs until she deliberately changed her name to white sounding name that’s when she started getting calls for interviews.

    This is bad.

  18. if you don’t have a degree your resume won’t make it through the ats
What lie is she telling you?

  19. Should preface, this is not for ALL jobs. No one will be working on my surgeries degree-free, no sir! I will NOT be your practice dummy

  20. I have 12 certifications, and im in college at 25 as I couldn’t get a job and have been applying for almost two years (since I lost my last job due to layoffs offs) and nothing. I cant even get a customer service role. I’m a professional interviewee at this point. Not to mention the job market has gotten weird. I drove an hour to an "interview" yesterday only to show up at what was a recruiter agency office to fill out bank paperwork?!¿ for if I get the job with their client?! What. That’s sketchy. Got offered one job as an accountant for 12 dollars an hour! Are you kidding me? And the only other job I got was another accounting position but the desks in office were first comr-first serve? Wtf is wrong with this society. Living expenses has increased by 210% where I am and minimum wage has been at 7.25 since 2008/9.

  21. I😭😅🤣🤣😂🕺 im applying to be a nuclear engineer without a degree. I have zero degrees and degree free. I cant wait to lock in the positions lol. Good luck everybody else 😅

  22. I worked with people who’s named on parents and had no degrees. A stack of letters of recommendations touting project facts on high profile projects is more valuable than a degree.

  23. If you get a job in IT, you are doing your own small part in destroying our freedom and our world.

  24. Completely false, especially in this economy.

Companies want that degree plus 5 years experience for an entry level job.

  25. What’s an advanced Computer Science degree ? How does it differ from a computer science degree?

  26. It really depends on the job. I do AI research and have a MSc in AI, which is considered low for the job I am doing (most people have at least a PhD).

  27. I’m a college dropout and I’m currently making $70k base pay in the northeast working in IT. No certifications either. Just experience and smarts.
