  1. I had a set of 2-way DJ speaker from Highschool (Kicker subwoofers installed) and EV Amp hooked up to a 2 channel mixer (for my ancient Technique 1200’s) and even though it wasn’t 5.1 surround, the bass that it produced for movies and the acoustics of my basement movie setup was enough to really enjoy a movie. and FEEL the sound. I recently had a flood that destroyed my whole basement/kids room/media room/office and now I’m starting all over and all out of pocket because insurance isn’t covering anything. Depressing to say the least. I’ve been out of the game so long and I REALLY appreciate this video because it is giving me ideas and the knowledge I forgot I knew. I will be a frequent visitor of you page. You’re great! Thank you!

  2. Hello Chris, I’m interested in a home theater sound system for my living room and bedroom. Is there a sound system that can work for both rooms? If not, is there a sound system that can easily be changed from one room to the other? Thank you

  3. Can you use a receiver that has a max output of 100w with a speaker that has a RMS of 145w or would that damage the speaker?

  4. I just purchased a used receiver and some 5.1 surround speakers off of FB Marketplace today for under $100. Granted, the receiver is from 2010 and the speakers are an unknown for me, I’m going to be passing the audio to the receiver via Optical Out on my TV since everything else is connected to the TV. I use plex for all my movies and TV shows that I’ve purchased in physical medium, and I’m building out a HDTV antennna + tuner to be able to get OTA HDTV DVR shenanigans.

Down another expensive hobby rabbit hole I go!

  5. The great audiophile rabbit hole lol soundbars are simple and basic but can also be very expensive. I prefer the connection option of avr but the particular ones with the connections needed are expensive as well ughgh.

  6. I tell you sir-mam; The good speakers, and the Audio receivers that I have bought used; I would not have bought them brand new at the retail price avg. of $500.00, the used price I would buy one, the use price is a good price for them as a new product I would buy; but the 1 and lowest stars on an Amazon, eBay, and the item websites, etc., is what caused me to take so long to buy one, new, glad I didn’t, sir-mam, but I needed one anyway so, I bought them used; at a reasonably price; the ones I have the Audio receivers, make a click sound when turning them off etc., again glad I bought them used; true;

  7. Multiple speakers placed around the room shits onsoumd bars. Have the sound pass from left rear to right front makes a movie or game that much better. In games it also allows to locate someone shooting from an unknown location. My go to sound test movie is behind enemy lines. Missle chase scene and sniper shooting at the dam scene. Amazing sound.

  8. Man. About 8 years ago I found an entire hifi home listening setup that included not just the receiver and speakers but also a cd player radio record player and cassette player all in a wooden shelf with a glass door at a thrift shop. They didn’t know what they had and had it all priced at $50 because the tech seemed “outdated.” Loved the shit out of that setup until I moved to a tiny NYC apartment and couldn’t take it with me. Ended up selling it for a good price but I miss that thing.

  9. There may be a reason why people buy a soundbar. It may be about simplicity You don’t have to run cables to multiple speakers and if they are supplied with rear speakers then they can be wireless . ie. simpler and everything is in one unit . however you can’t get real analogue sound from a vinyl record ,? and Is there anyone who has Dolby prologic or similar for all TV channels that don’t have 5.1 sound . here in Sweden there are TV channels that still don’t have 5.1 sound not even some HD channels . It may even be that the channel that has been available with 5.1 sound no longer has it . maybe simply with cost to do for the TV companies or that they think that people are not that interested in surround

  10. Im building a theater type game room now and I’m a contractor so anything is possible. But audio is confusing me. It’s a big room 24 x32 foot and idk if I should put speakers in the cieling or what?

  11. I’m from africa kenya and would like to ask you to suggest sites that we can buy and ship receivers without breaking the bank away from things like fedex and dhl, those who import and sell to us will either charge double or tripple what its being sold on amazon/ebay whether new or used, eg a used rx a760 here goes for around 900$ or new at 1200-1500$

  12. I got a 5.1 setup consisting of used old components: An Onkyo HT-R518 for 80€ and the Teufel Consono 35 Mk3 for 220€, it seems like this setup would have been about 700-800€ with the original prices, maybe even more, I paid 300, but goddamn it’s powerful
Every time my group of friends wants to watch a movie, it is clear from the start that we HAVE to watch it at my place

  13. You guys are getting a Klipsch 5.0 system with a 5.2 av receiver for freaky 600$????? Come on. It’s going to be atleast 3 times that in India.

  14. Mexico second hand market is so expensive, hopefully I can build my setup over the next year

  15. Pienso que debemos de tener un systems de home theater o sonido, de acuerdo a donde vivamos,si tienes una casa propia u puedes tener un siytema de mucho valor , pues compralo, pero esto de sonido va de acuerdo a lugar donde vives…

  16. Bro HELP Please 🤦🏿‍♂️ I’m trying to find some quality tower speakers for my TV during research Rockville speakers come up 70% of the time but the reviews are to mixed for me I want the type of speakers I can simply connect via a Optical cord are hdmi cord not looking to buy a receiver you did a review on Rockville speakers years ago right

  17. Inexpensive is true: sir-mam; I have several receivers that I bought used; and is fairly good; but I would not have bought them at the new retail price for that model, speakers etc., again; sir-mam the used price is in fact the right price as being retail new; for those speakers and mainly receivers; sir-mam now the receivers that I have bought, both of them make a certain tick sound when I turns them off, but they work; that I don’t like; top brand to; I finally bought one-them cause I need one that’s good; again at a used price; research is good before buying; sir-mam; good video;

  18. Hello, I have a Yamaha RX-V861 that was given to me. What surround/speakers would you recommend on a budget?

  19. @04:25 I’m a total noob when it comes to anything above built-in speakers of a TV, so this is probably a stupid question. Why does the receiver need to support 4K and HDMI? I thought it’s only responsible for handling audio and not video.

  20. moving into a one bedroom apartment and want to enhance my tv audio in my living room, want to spend no more than around 300, should I go soundbar or surround sound system?

  21. I’ve been going to goodwill past few days, been getting hella Sony home theater speakers for $4!

  22. i recently paid under $600 for a full 5.1 setup. i got 4 micca mb42x for $150, and the center version for $80. A dayton audio 8 inch for $139 and then a denon 730h for $300. so damn happy with the quality

  23. I had some busted DJ speakers i integrated to my home theater system. They were powered speakers and the amp on them was shot so i turned them into passive speakers by removing the amps ,installing a bass/treble crossover and plugging them in the AV receiver i got from FB marketplace. They gained new life. Definitely glad i didn’t get rid of them when i bought new dj speakers.

  24. You showed a Yamaha home theater pack there a few times and i happened to find a guy near me selling what looked like exactly that kit, at least the speakers were and it has a Yamaha RX-V377 with it for $125 in good condition. Figured it was a steal and way better than any sound bar we were affording for $200. My wifes just going to have to trust me on this lolll

  25. Nice Video.
I would add people need to buy a mini PC and use it as a media center. You can get a mini PC with HDMI audio out that supports all the surround formats as well as 4k video for a few hundred dollars.

  26. Hey @Chris Majestic First off, I just want to say thank you for all the awesome content you share — your videos have been a huge help as I’m starting to get into home theater setups. 🙌

I’m pretty new to AVRs and could really use your advice. I have a Sony -DZ650 home theater system and a Sony Google TV X75K, and I’m looking to buy my first AVR that would be compatible with both. Any suggestions on what to look for or specific models that would work well in this setup?

Really appreciate your time and all the knowledge you bring to the community!

    Thanks again,

  27. What’s the best type of input for audio? I have optical but I’ve been looking for HDMI receivers. Not sure if it’s even a better quality or anything, I’m a car audio guy honestly

  28. Hey everyone,

I’m building a home theater setup with an Integra DRX-3.4 AVR and Definitive Technology speakers:

DM10 (4 ohms) as center channel

    DM40 (4 ohms) as front left/right

ProMonitor 1000 (8 ohms) as surrounds or height speakers

Since the DRX-3.4 supports 4–16 ohm speakers, I believe it’s safe to mix the 4-ohm DM series speakers with the 8-ohm ProMonitor 1000 surrounds.

I plan to use a powered subwoofer with an 80 Hz crossover to offload bass.

    I’d appreciate advice on:

Safely mixing 4Ω and 8Ω speakers on the same AVR

Proper calibration for volume and balance between different impedances

Best practices for cooling the AVR when running 4Ω speakers on the fronts

    Recommendations for a matching subwoofer

If anyone has experience with this exact or similar setup, I’d love your input!

    Thanks in advance!

  29. Would it be worth the money to upgrade from the epson ls300 to the epson ls800?

  30. I just got a whole set up for $140. And the speakers i got were infinity primus 360s, 150s, and a center boston acoustic 225c. I was only getting the speakers, but the guy had an older avr that had an optical port, with a remote, so i gave him $$30 for it. Yeah, it soesnt have uncompressed 5.1 audio, but it has dolby surround, which is 5.1 compressed. And it has prologic II that is honestly pretty impressive turning stereo into 5.1 channels.

For under 10% of what a new set up would cost for almost the same results, I can accept that. Also the fact that all i would need to do is upgrade the receiver to get atmos, and hdmi 2.3 with eARC. The speakers i have were well over $1000 new, back in 2006 so probably $1600 in 2024 money. I would call that a deal.

And yeah, they seller had the speakers set up when i got there to test. The receiver was so cheap that i just gambled the $30 on it and it paid off.

Also check you local thrift stores. Most people have no idea what AVRs are worth, so you can get really good deals, or find outdated equipment priced sky high lol.

  31. i came here because I have a ton of dvds and want something ~£250 to watch nice movies cheap
I understand that most people watching are willing to spend more but for me i would like to see something actually budget

  32. Tbh soundbar is enough for 99% of people. Only rich people can afford avr/ speaker setup. It also needs sound proofing which is expensive

  33. I just got the SR 494 onyx AV receiver and a sonny Bravia x90l tv with a Samsung sound bar q800 D. My challenge was and is that I am unable to output sound from my tv via the Av receiver to the soundbar. the connection I used was/IS connecting the HDMI cable via the arc port from the tv to the Av receiver arc port and finally connecting the sound bar to the bd/DVD port of the Av receiver using the HDMI cable. unfortunately still no sound, I have put the Av receiver aside as there is no luck even after switching the cords in all directions, is there a tutorial on how to connect or a guide? please I am a complete newbie to this.

  34. The plastic speakers that come with the Yamaha YHT-1840 unfortunately don’t sound good. In addition, they seem to be thin plastic. The speakers that I had in my LG home theater system were of better quality. They were also heavier.

  35. budget friendly is relative
    budget friendly is relative
    budget friendly is relative

    $500 for a sound bar…
