2025 Toyota 4Runner Review | Consumer Reports

The ever-popular Toyota 4Runner stays true to its off-road roots with a traditional body-on-frame design, now shared with the redesigned Tacoma pickup and larger Land Cruiser SUV. For 2025, the 4Runner gains easier access, updated controls, and more advanced safety features. Buyers can also choose from 12 trims, including versions with a hybrid powertrain.

  1. Great review! I Hope you like the 2022 styling from the pro GQP Toyota company! You sill be seeing it for the next 15 years!

  2. Toyota abandoned their very, very, very loyal following using that 4 cylinder turbo. We need a very low tech V6 model…. oooops they had that in the 5th generation TRD off road premium.

  3. It would have been nice if they mentioned what made it different mechanically from the other trim levels. It has 4wd? Is it the same as the others? Does it have lockers or traction control?
Instead this car was reviewed as if it was just a grocery getter with no mention of what it could do.

  4. I think Toyota did a good job on this 6th gen. If I did not have a new 5th gen, I would test drive one. I am sure it will become more refined in the years to come. I would like to see a plug in hybrid that would do my daily commute.

  5. Toyota made an awesome vehicle to follow up the iconic 5th gen and then slapped us all in the face by removing the premium sr5 trim model. That model with 4×4 was a great value for those of us who loved the base model but wanted heated softex seats without getting into real luxury leather and extra frills. By forcing you into the trd sport trim to get those features and into the 50k plus range they are showing their hand that up charging is all they care about now. The sr5 premium model proved that you could get a Toyota without the tax. The Toyota tax is very real on this new generation. Interesting to hear that the gear shifting isn’t completely smooth. Same as the 5th gen then lol. Honestly I own a fifth gen and if it’s the same or even a bit better then ide be happy as a clam if it stays reliable as always.

  6. you can only review a 4Runner after 100,000 miles. Otherwise, you are just looking for things that you miss from other cars. After 10 years, you can tell me about the ball joints, power seats, windows, or engine mounts. The serpentine belt, spark pugs, AC compressor, etc.

  7. Can you compare the Land Cruiser to the 4 Runner please? I would like to know if the LC is a smoother and quieter ride.

  8. Finally a reviewer that notices all the flaws of Toyotas from the past years… everyone glazes them and overlooks it bc of reliability but the cars are overpriced pieces of shit.

  9. In Canada – land of taxed to way past your death, and an economy only slightly better than Springfield (the cartoon one), they are charging over 100 thousand dollars for the TRD pro and Trail Hunter. That is double the average annual income of the majority of Canadians.

  10. Did you actually get the rated MPG? I made the tragic mistake of buying the 2025 Tacoma Trailhunter with a supposed 22-24 MPG. Real world 15-18 MPG. Toyota seems to love lying about their fuel economy.

  11. Brand new SR5 4runner for over 50K after all is said and done, 2023 4runner with 44k miles selling for $44,000 these dealers and Toyota are smoking crack. What a shame.

  12. Wow…My dad had a 4Runner from 2003-2019 and barely had any mechanical issues and it was a beast. The interior was pretty crappy. But after this review….I’m seriously re-thinking the game-plan of a modern 4Runner. It’s just that I keep hearing from mechanics that Toyotas are built for 300K miles…But you should enjoy being IN the car and driving it, too…

  13. Seems like the only good thing about it is no horrible annoying stop/start…I know the limited trim has this garbage..

  14. Two things happening here: Toyota making very bad design decisions and most mysteriously is its incapacity of design a smooth powertrain once again. Unless you only drive on forestry roads the new Pilot is head and above shoulder of this one for most users.

  15. 4runner badge with corolla engine….no third row🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙🤙

  16. I will keep my low mileage 08 Limited 4×4. Toyota is not listening to their core 4Runner customer base with this redesign and 4 cylinder engine.

  17. Manual air conditioner, cheap plastic, small screen, 4 cylinder turbo, small tires. I would get 2026 Passport instead.

  18. CR likes Hondas. If it’s not a Honda, these pasty sweater-vest Connecticut guys will spill their soymilk on their loafers. CR is terribly biased.

  19. 4Runner needs a major redesign! It’s age it starting to show! That interior is old school cheap Toyota. They can do better! Look at the 2026 Honda Passport!

  20. I’m a long time Toyota truck guy, but now there’s too many reported issues. I’d buy the new Honda Passport Trailsport over this or even the new Landcruiser.

  21. I’ve only driven 4Runners since 2004, but I think my next purchase will be a Ford Ranger Raptor. It’s actually cheaper than some of the top-level 4Runner models, plus it has a 400-horsepower V-6 that can be upgraded to 455 horsepower with a simple performance tune.

  22. I love my 2025 4Runner quiet and smoother ride,..the 2024 4Runner was so noisy can’t even hear other passenger talking about inside cabin..2025 4banger it is!!I love it

  23. 5th gen 4Runner is my all time favorite 4×4. I have been driving them since the second model year. I had extremely high expectations for a 6th gen that Toyota was never going to be able to meet, so though I really dislike everything about the 6th gen, I’m not sure if it is objectively bad, personal bias, or because Toyota’s current path has caused platform fatigue. 4Runner, Tacoma, LC 250, GX550, Tundra, LC 300 Series, LX etc all same platform with either same turbo 4 cylinder/transmission combination, or turbo 6 cylinder/transmission combination.

  24. Thank you for the honest review. So tired of all the glowing reviews on the 4Runner. I drove my friends brand new TRD Pro and the engine/transmission/EV system is terrible with ultra delayed throttle response.

  25. Purchased the the 4Runner Trail Hunter about 5 months ago. There are no blank spots for accessories, they’re all filled up and the infant entainment center in every respect is better, even a large knob, plus no issues at all with Android auto. Compared with the 5th generation 4Runner, this is a true winner with loads of power and off-road capabilities. The upper trims are a lot quieter than the base model SR5, they have active noise cancellation. The Trailhunter is very quiet at high speed with the aggressive off-road tires.
